"Import the third world, and MAGA start acting like the third world." Nativists are so concerned about theoretical bad behavior from immigrants they have a massive blind spot to their own bad behavior which is increasingly no different than what they fear. It's not lost on me that Trump was acting like a Somalian pirate warlord (stealing oil tankers, selling Medicare fraud pardons, etc) while criticizing normal Somali-Americans. Maybe stuff like tribalism, corruption, fraud, ethno-religious centrism, collective responsibility, etc is just bad no matter who does it and we should go back to judging others by the content of their character.

This article is true because both nativism and conservatism are born of and breed cowardice in politics and culture. It is fundamentally a reactionary politics of fear and retreat.

Your comparison to the "woke left" is a little confusing. Who are the woke left pundits and influencers you're comparing these nativist gop power brokers to?

What were their equally self-imposed, indefensible, ideological ghettos?

What cities would even be left that are heavy White native born majority? Immigrants always flock to the cities.

Besides: revealed preferences also shows people self segregate when allowed to. Look at the neighborhoods within those cities

Portland Oregon is majority white, surely it must have a Republican majority 🤡

A lot of us who are critical immigration are the ones who have the most experience with certain groups.

For example, we know what it's like being the target of a family of 40 Arabs. We know what it feels like walking into a mall where no one speaks our language and gives us angry looks. We know how it feels taking the commuter train and hearing people shout in Arabic. And what it feels like to be seen as a walking target because we are white or have blond hair. We know our children will have to experience the same.

Many who are the most supportive of massive immigration live in safe suburbs and areas, and have no or little direct personal experience. They think of migrant areas as places to buy exotic food.

Another awesome article from Zaid Jilani! Brandon Gill's case is really sad, especially how he excluded his wife in a campaign ad.

The cruel irony of Joel Webbon is that he is not as hateful as his public persona. Not only does he live in Austin, but I've heard his wife is the real breadwinner of the family and he is respectful to female journalists when they interview him. As Helen Lewis reported. That doesn't sound too patriarchal.
