"But why did it take my intervention to force the AP to play fair? There’s no reason to badly misquote someone like that unless you’re a tabloid — or maybe if you’re just trying to help Vance’s opponents, the Democrats."
Kudos to you for calling out the AP's error! But um, that is one hell of an insinuation.
Sure - Except that's not what happened at fucking all. What was quoted was a complete sentiment in its entirety. Pray tell, EXACTLY what context you think changes the color of the exact quote?
Just because words CAN be taken out of context doesn't mean THIS particular sentence was. Prove your allegation.
Thanks for this. This election season my North Star is to remember the following concept: “deny them their pathos” referring to everyone (everyone!) whose message is “AHHHHH - be very afraid of the other guy!” We are easily stoked to outrage. And when we are constantly in that position, we don’t think as well.
Local news outlets maintain a decent degree of public trust, despite national media slipping into the low double figures, and a lot of them use the AP as their wire service. This type of thing puts them at financial risk -- and many are struggling as-is -- as it erodes at their trust by association. There are some places who are a weekly paper away from being a news desert where local pols can pull all sorts of goofy stuff.
The press does the evil work of dividing people by posting incomplete and misleading information. This tears apart the nation and creates unnecessary strife. And yet few call that behavior out and insist changes are needed.
"I called out the press for reporting something JD Vance objectively said."
What a fucking joke. The context of Vance's speech is undeniably that he doesn't believe we can do anything about gun violence in schools. It doesn't matter if he falsely qualifies it with "Oh, but I feel sad". He said that school shootings are a fact of life. That's *explicitly* what he said, in his own fucking words.
If JD Vance wanted to be accurate, he would say out loud that school shootings are a fact of life, because the US government and the overwhelming backing of bigotry and causing mental illness in our social structure, has become the norm.
I wouldn’t say nothing, but the rampant support of hate groups from the far right is a big part of it. The promotion of hate culture and erasing identities is a big part of it. You act like removing guns will end the culture of hate.
Then allow the oppressive genocide supporting regime to remove all civilians forms of defense? There’s no cut and dry path when it comes to guns themselves. Our system protects and raises people to be homocidal then claims to want to take our guns while they build terrorist supported cop cities. Take our guns and we will have no protection from the government. The system is the problem.
Great work, Zaid. I support JD/Trump but if you see this from the Right, don’t hesitate to raise the same red flag.
Oh man, the irony of this comment. It's just too much!!
The simple fact of the matter is that the people who make these tweets know exactly what they are doing and it is in fact what they are paid to do.
They also know that the initial tweet will likely go viral and that once that happens, their job is done.
Whatever criticisms or changes follow on from there are irrelevant.
It is a fact of life that the people doing these jobs at outlets like AP are assholes.
It is important to acknowledge that this is the case for so much of what is wrong with MSM.
Perfectly put.

Quoting the exact phrase a person uses is not a misquote.
Well, the problem with is:
“The exact phrase” Jesus Chrisis, said, doesn’t matter.
If you quote part of a persons statement without the entire statement, it’s very easy to mislead about their intent and meaning.

Here’s my references (“deprive them of their pathos” not “deny them” I had the wording wrong). https://mbird.com/theology/deprive-them-of-their-pathos-barth-politics-social-media/
Sounds great until someone comes along whom you should ACTUALLY be afraid of.
You know, like someone whose complete bungling of a national pandemic led to the deaths of over a million Americans.

Local news outlets are being bought up left and right by the Sinclair group. You're lauding the very media manipulation you're claiming to decry.

☝️pretzel logic ain’t just a Steely Dan album.
Illustrate the knot then.
He said that “ he laments that school shootings are a fact of life”
As for you, to paraphrase the great orator, Kamalala Ding Dong, the mentally challenged of the community are the mentally challenged of the community.
Lack of accountability is a big problem in the country,Zaid keep doing your part and hopefully others will follow.
If JD Vance wanted to be accurate, he would say out loud that school shootings are a fact of life, because the US government and the overwhelming backing of bigotry and causing mental illness in our social structure, has become the norm.
Right, the unfettered access to guns in schools has nothing to do with it. /s

No, I act like removing guns will prevent people who get consumed by hatred from killing school children with guns.

Thank you.
For me I’ll chalk this up as yet another example in a long line of, “why are you making me defend them?”

Yes, but you are somebody, Jilani, and most of us are not.
