The problem is too many people have the opposite opinion: science can't be allowed to stop politics. It doesn't matter whether our policies are right or wrong, as long as we "win"!
This is particularly true for activists, who often approach their causes with religious fervor...
Reality has always been manipulated by those in power but it sure seems as though the distortions are accelerating. Suppression of the truth leads to injustice, and pain.
Regarding that communication gimmick used for autistic kids. I saw something on TV many years ago that thoroughly debunked it. You just had to see the video of the kid staring off into space and the facilitator staring at the letter board to know it was bullshit. I was gobsmacked to see that it is still being used.
And BTW politics stopping science dates back at least to "global warming"

In all my years around progressive activists, this was the M.O.: "Suppress any facts that make us look bad."
I am pretty sure that people on the right do this too, but they're not the ones running the NIH, NSF, etc. right now.
